There are several scattered islands along the Mediterranean coast, and some coastal islands known as the Channel Islands that are in the English Channel and to the northwest of Caen. The mountainous Corsica is France's largest island. It is located 99 miles southeast of Nice. Mountains such as the Alps or the Jura are mainly located in eastern, south central, and southern France. The country's highest point is at Mont Blanc, which reaches a staggering 15, 770 ft. It also happens to be the second highest point in Europe. The Eiffel Tower was built by Gustave Eiffel's company for the 1889 World's Fair which was hosted in Paris, marking the 100-year anniversary of the French Revolution. It is composed mostly of iron, reaching a gargantuanheight of 986 feet. With about 6.9 million people visiting the Eiffel Tower each year, the tower has become one of the most well known structures in the world. France is an effective democracy. It is a unitary state with a semi-presidential system, having both a president and a prime minister. Presidential elections are held every five years (since 2000) and are conducted only by direct popular vote since 1962. A president is elected in two stages of voting. All political parties are involved in the first round. In the event of an absolute majority, the election is over and the most popular candidate becomes the president. However, if there is no definite majority present in the first round, then a second round is required. The top two candidates from the first stage enter a runoff election and the winner becomes president. Given that France is a relatively large country, the direct counting of ballots can be very inefficient (especially with over 80% of the population taking part). The French adjust to this by wearing warmer clothes, and heating their home. In addition, France takes the opportunity to build ski resorts, which attracts several tourists.
