Homeworkthird Grade James Test

We have had fun this week, working hard and expanding our knowledge. In math we began our chapter on 'Time', we are learning to tell time to the five minute, that the hour hand is the shortest and the minute hand is longer. We have learned to write time two different ways, such as 1:25 would be 25 minutes after 1 or one twenty-five, 3:30 would be half past three, or 30 minutes after 3. The kids also are learning to tell the difference between AM and PM and how this changes throughout the day. We encourage you to practice telling time with your kids at home, this is obviously another one of those life skills that they will need and use as they grow. In writing we have been reviewing 'adjectives' and that they help to describe a noun. The kids also know that adjectives help to add details to our writing making it more interesting to read. We have done several fun activities, the kids got to drink hot cocoa to help them describe how it tastes, smells, looks and sounds. They then wrote their describing words on a paper cup to put up in the room. Today we got to eat popcorn while brainstorming adjectives to describe our tasty buttery treat.
Our spelling skill for this week focuses on 'R' controlled words that are spelling using 'ar, or , and ore. In reading we finished up our story Jamaica Louise James, we spend a great deal of time learning how to make an inference and that we use clues from the story/author to help us.
Kids are really working hard to reach our third quarter Reading Counts goal of 17 points. We still have several weeks left as the quarter does end until March 24th. Keep reading!!
Homework for this week will be practicing TIME, the kids will be reading the analog clocks and writing what time they show and then also having to draw the hands of the clock for the time given.
*Reminder the Valentine Party is on Tuesday at 2:15. Please do not send your valentines or boxes until Tuesday morning, there is not enough space in our rooms to store them.
One more thing...If you have NOT sent in your child's 'Friendly Letter' address please be sure to send it with them on Monday. or email your teacher with the address. We will begin this writing unit next week and the kids love sending their letters to the family member or friend on the sheet. If we do not have an address your kids won't be able to mail their letters.
Have a wonderful weekend and enjoy this Spring like weather!
